AgoraSim

Abstract:

AI literacy is crucial for young people, particularly their ability to recognize and thoughtfully engage with AI in daily life. Social media platforms, which youth heavily engage with, extensively employ AI-powered recommendation algorithms to customize content feeds for each user. While young people readily consume algorithmically recommended content, a critical question emerges: Do they truly understand how these algorithms shape and constrain their online experiences?

Existing educational approaches attempt to teach about AI in social media, but they often fail to provide an intuitive understanding of filter bubbles and echo chambers created by these algorithms. To address this gap, we propose AgoraSim, a social media simulator that allows young people to participate in a virtual environment. Users interact with AI agents with distinct personas and behaviors, including creating, commenting, and sharing posts.
